I switched on my camera, upped the exposure to 15 seconds, and set the focus to infinity. 15 seconds later, I had a fantastic, high-quality picture of an empty black rectangle on my storage card. This was the best photo of the night. This was the second-best photo of the night. In two hours, I saw three meteors. Thats infinitely more meteors per hour than the average over my life prior to August 13, 2009! (The secret to avoiding disappointment is to recalibrate your perspective using irrelevant statistics. Another example: I broke my right arm. Thats infinitely better than being one of the 0.0003% of people in the world who go to Harvard!*) *Actually, Im pretty sure this statement is comforting not because of the statistic but because it makes fun of people at Harvard. The moral of the story is that if celestial bodies wont move for you, you can at least move your camera to create cheap blur effects that look like meteor tails, because nobody reading your blog can tell the difference anyway. I can relate because my younger cousins who are four to six years old have already been exposed to recording videos and playing on apps. Introducing devices to children at such a young age can be destructive to them later on in life. It will create dependency and addiction issues as they grow up, for example extreme anxiety. As widely as I read in all kinds of sources, I was ignorant of what has happened to the verb twit. I knew that it was old-fashioned of me to use it as a synonym for tease, but I like the word. I’d no inkling of the other meanings that are out there. For example, some speakers assign sexual connotations to the word. (I’m not even going there in this post.) The verb twit comes from Old English atwite, â€Å"to blame, to reproach.† It used to be spelled twite and was pronounced with a long i. It has lost the final e and is now pronounced with a short i. The unabridged online OED I use gives this as the first definition: twit transitive verb: To blame, find fault with, censure, reproach, upbraid (a person), especially in a light or annoying way; to cast an imputation upon; to taunt. The OED app on my phone gives this definition: twit (twits, twitting, twitted) verb: tease or taunt (someone), especially in a good-humoured way. The first definition given in Merriam-Webster is â€Å"to subject to ridicule or reproach.† In my Web searches, I did find examples of twit used in the sense of ridicule, but I must admit that most of them date from the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.
