Our lives are constantly being influenced by the new innovative technology, ideas, and the people who make up our society. Children know how to use tablets at the age of four and people are becoming increasingly intelligent. Or so we think? The opinions and ideas of our people are having both diminishing and positive effects on us. Or is it not so black and white, but grey? â€Å"The point is to be our most creative selves, not distract ourselves to death.† This quote from TED Talk entitled â€Å"Alone Together† by Sherry Turkle caught my attention. She exclaims how we are so caught up in technology, that we aren’t realizing what’s happening around us. We are so dictated and hijacked by it to the point that people are sacrificing conversations for†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"His inability to communicate with me, his own mother makes me sad. I think if I can’t control him right now, I may loose my son. â€Å" This quote is from a mother who has a computer-addicted son, made me somber because I realized how damaging and destructive electronics are to the most important relationships. The son wasn’t appreciative of his mother’s meal and continued on being glued to his computer screen. Another quote spoken by the man was â€Å"Kids are spending more than 50 hours a week on social media, thatâ€℠¢s more than a full work week.† This statement shocked me because it means that they spend an upwards of 7 hours a day on their devices, decreasing the amount of time to socialize (in person) with their peers. Children are missing out on their social development and the opportunity to participate in other activities. Another insane point made is that young children are self taught on the ways and hacks of technology. I can relate because my younger cousins who are four to six years old have already been exposed to recording videos and playing on apps. Introducing devices to children at such a young age can be destructive to them later on in life. It will create dependency and addiction issues as they grow up, for example extreme anxiety.
